304 Stainless steel wire mesh
304 (UNS S30400 | EN 1.4301 | AISI 304) stainless steel wire mesh is the standard " 18/8” austenitic ss woven wire mesh, meaning it is generally non-magnetic in the annealed condition, slightly magnetic after cold working. and offers an excellent balance of strength, corrosion resistance, formability, and cost.
Typical Chemical Composition:
Grade | Chromium (Cr) | Nickel (Ni) | Carbon (C) | Manganese (Mn) | Silicon (Si) | Iron (Fe) |
304 | 18.0 – 20.0% | 8.0 – 10.5% | ≤ 0.08% | ≤ 2.0% | ≤ 0.75% | Balance |
Mesh Type | Weave Pattern | Mesh Count | Micron Range | Characteristic |
Plain Weave | 1:1 | 1-300 mesh | >=50um | Most common. Each wire goes over/under one. Good for general sieving. |
Twill Weave | 2:1 | 1-400 mesh | >=40um | Allows for finer meshes with heavier wires. More durable than plain weave. |
Dutch Weave | Warp wires wider than shute wires | 12x64 to 325x2300 Mesh | >=5um | High strength, depth filtration. Used for fine liquid filtration. |
Reverse Dutch Weave | Warp wires closer than shute wires | 260x40mesh to 800x100mesh | >=50um | Smooth surface, high flow. Good for backwashing filters. |
Welded Mesh | Resistance Welded | Lager size | > 1/4 inch openings | Rigid screens for cages, partitions, and heavy-duty guards. |
Crimped Mesh | Wires crimped before weaving | Lager size | Any large openings size | High strength for heavy impact and large particle separation (e.g., rock screens). |
Roll Width: 0.1m-5m. Commonly is 1m 1.22m 1.5m 2m or custom.....
Roll Length: 30m/roll 50m/roll or custom
Key Properties:
· Good corrosion resistance in atmosphere, fresh water, mild chemicals
· Excellent formability and weldability
· Hygienic & easy to clean
· Operating temperature:
Continuous: -196°C ~ 800°C
Not recommended for seawater, high chloride, strong acid environments
Common Applications
Because it is the "general purpose" stainless steel, 304 mesh is found in virtually every industry.
· Food Processing: Conveyor belts, fryer baskets, sieves for flour and sugar, food-grade filters.
· Pharmaceuticals: Vibratory sifters for powders, tablet coating pans, vial washing guards.
· Water Filtration: Well screens, sediment filters, pool and spa filters.
· Architecture: Safety grilles, window guards, decorative panels, animal enclosures.
· Mining & Aggregate: Vibratory screens for sifting sand, gravel, and minerals.
· Automotive: Speaker grilles, radiator guards, gaskets.
Special Note: "304" vs. "304L" vs. "304H"
When purchasing mesh, you might see these variants:
· 304 (S30400): Standard grade. Good for most applications.
· 304L (S30403): Low Carbon. Best for welded mesh. The lower carbon prevents chromium carbide formation at the welds, maintaining corrosion resistance. This is the most common specification for wire mesh.
· 304H (S30409): High Carbon. Used for high-temperature applications (above 500°C) where greater strength is needed.
