309 Stainless Steel Wire Mesh

309 Stainless Steel Wire Mesh (UNS S30900) is an high-temperature austenitic stainless steel weaved mesh known for its excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance, which is formulated with high Cr-Ni (22–24% Cr, 12–15% Ni) content, designed for extreme thermal/oxidizing conditions, while being distinct from its low-carbon variant 309S (S30908/1.4833).

Core Mechanical & Performance Advantages

· Mechanical Properties (Annealed, Room Temp):

Tensile strength ≥515 MPa;

Yield strength (0.2% offset) ≥205 MPa;

Elongation (δ5) ≥40%;

Non-magnetic (annealed; slightly magnetic after cold working);

Not hardenable by heat treatment (anneal at 1140–1175°C, water quench recommended).

· Oxidation & Corrosion Performance:

Excellent high-temp oxidation and thermal fatigue resistance; Superior to 304/316L in oxidizing acids (concentrated nitric acid); Limited resistance to reducing acids (HCl) and high-chloride aqueous solutions (inferior to 904L); 309 has higher carbon for better high-temp strength but requires passivation after welding in corrosive service.

· Processability:

Good weldability (use ER309/ER309L filler metal); Formable, deep-drawable; Machining needs sharp tools and proper cooling to avoid work hardening.

Common Applications

· Furnace Parts: Conveyor belts, muffles, and radiant tubes in furnaces operating below 1100°C.

· Annealing Covers: Mesh for gas burn-off in bright annealing processes.

· Kiln Screens: Filtration of hot powders (e.g., cement, ceramics) during cooling or processing.

· Automotive: Exhaust system gaskets and particulate supports (in after-treatment components).

· Thermal Oxidizers: Flame arrestor media where heat resistance is critical.
